IntroductionNetwork Time Protocol (NTP) is almost as old as the Internet itself, developed and designed by from the ,it has been in constant use and continually updated since 1985. NTP is a protocol designed to synchronize theclocks on computers and networks across the Internet or Local Area Networks (LANs). While NTP can synchronise to any time source its primary function is to utilise UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), a global timescale based on the time told by atomic clocks (TAI - International Atomic Time) but accounts for the slowing of the Earth's rotation caused by the Moon's gravity by adding Leap Seconds. Atomic clocks are the most absolute time-keeping devices. They work on the principle that the atom, caesium-133, has an exact number of cycles of radiation every second (9,192,631,770). This has proved so accurate the International System of Units (SI) has now defined the second as the duration of 9,192,631,770 cycles of radiation of the caesium-133 atom. Although the future in atomic clocks seems to be based around other elements including strontium where it is thought nano-second (a second every billion years) accuracy will be achievable. NTP does not account for suchfeatures as daylight saving or time zones although local device settings can account for it without interfering with the UTC synchronisation OverviewNTP uses an algorithm (Marzullo's algorithm) to synchronise time on a networkand the current version of NTP can maintain time over the public Internet to within 10 milliseconds (1/100th of a second) and can perform even better over LANs with accuracies of 200 microseconds (1/5000th of a second) not unheard of. work within the TCP/IP suite and rely on UDP (User Datagram Protocol). A less complex form of NTP called Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) that does not require the storing of information about previous communications, needed by NTP, is used in some devices and applications where high accuracy timing is not as important. It is also included as standard in Windows software (although more recent versions of Microsoft Windows have the full NTP installed) and the source code is free and readily available for both windows and Linux based systems from . NTP servers judge the distance of each network device from a timing source and organises them into Strata. These Stratum levels exist to prevent cycles and guarantee accuracy. Stratum 0 are devices such as atomic clocks, that are not connected to the network. Stratum 1 devices are systems that are attached to stratum 0 devices, often time servers that receive a UTC time from either a GPS (Global Positioning System) or radio receiver. Stratum 2 devices are further out and request their timing information from stratum 1 devices.Currently NTP can support up to 16 levels although the further away from a reference clock the less accurate they are in comparison to UTC. /> Timestamps NTP uses timestamps to represent the current time of the day each. As time is linear each subsequenttimestamp is always greater than the previous one. NTP timestamps are in two formats but they relay the seconds from a set point in time (January 1 1900) known as the prime epoch. The timestamps restart every 136 years with the next wrap around due in 2036, this has caused some uneasiness amongst some in the NTP community who fear a Millennium Bug type scenario, although there is no evidence that such problems will occur. The NTP algorithm uses this timestamp to determine the amount to advance or retreat the system or network clock business firewalls. NTP analyses the timestamp's values including the frequency of errors and its stability. A NTP server will maintain an estimate the quality ofboth the reference clocks and itself. The NTP program (daemon on Linux, service on Windows) runs in the background. NTP exchanges time information by packets (a block of data) but refuses to believe the time it is told until several exchanges have taken place, each passing a set of tests known asprotocol specifications network security. Only if the replies from a server satisfy these tests does the NTP utilise this information. It usually takes about five minutes (five good samples) until a NTP server is accepted as a timing source. NTP contains its own security measures in the form of authentication. Authentication verifies that each timestamp has come from the intended time reference by analysing a set of agreed encryption keys that are sent along with the time information. NTP, using Message Digest encryption (MD5) to un-encrypt the key, analyses it and confirms whether it has come from the trusted time source by verifying it against a set of trusted keys. Utilising UTCTo receive and distribute and authenticated UTC time source there are currently two types of NTP server, the GPS and the radio referenced NTP server. While both these ststems distribute UTC in identical ways the way they receive the timing information differs. A GPS NTP time serveris an ideal time and frequency source because it can provide highly accurate time anywhere in the world using relatively cheap components. Each GPS satellite transmits in two frequencies L2 for the military use and L1 for use by civilians transmitted at 1575 MHz, Low-cost GPS antennas and receivers are now widely available. The radio signal transmitted by the satellite can pass through windows but can be blocked by buildings so the ideal location for a GPS antenna is on a rooftop with a good view of the sky. The more satellites it can receive from the better the signal. However, roof-mounted antennas can be prone to lighting strikes or other voltage surges so a suppressor is highly recommend being installed inline on the GPS cable. The cable between the GPS antenna and receiver is also critical. The maximum distance that a cable can run is normally only 20-30 metres but a high quality coax cable combined with a GPS amplifier placed in-line to boost the gain of the antenna can allow in excess of 100 metre cable runs. This can provide difficulties in installation in larger buildings if the server is too far from the antenna. An alternative solution is to use a radioreferenced NTP time server. These rely on a number of national time and frequency radio transmissions that that broadcast UTC time. In Britain the signal (called MSF) is broadcast by the in Cumbria which serves as the United Kingdom's national time reference, there are also similar systems in the USA (WWVB) and in France, Germany and Japan. A radio based NTP server usually consists of a rack-mountable time server, and an antenna, consisting of a ferrite bar inside a plastic enclosure, which receives the radio time and frequency broadcast. It should always be mounted horizontally at a right angle toward the transmission for optimum signal strength. Data is sent in pulses, 60 a second. These signals provides UTC time to an accuracy of 100 microseconds, however, the radio signal has a finite range and is vulnerable to interference. /> 2011-12-10 You can add items from the left menu by dragging them here.

Two days after the battery of a Lenovo 5030 laptop exploded, severely injuring a 21-year-old in the eyes, asenior Lenovo official told Newsline that investigations on the accident could not commence till the remains of the laptop and battery were given to the company. > We are waiting for all the circumstantial evidence to start ourinvestigations. firewall hardware The remains of the laptop and the battery are crucial to ascertain whether the battery was a genuine Lenovo product. Ninety per cent of batteries sold are from the grey market, said Poonam Kaul, Director of Corporate Communications, Lenovo-India. Kaul said the accident could not be linked to the series of explosions of the BL-5C battery models reported in 2007, though Kumars battery was also of the same make. The 5030 Lenovo laptopwas introduced in March 2009, while the incidents of overheating were reported in 2007 there is absolutely no link between the two, said Kaul. The mobile laptop maker had issued a product advisory in 2007, withdrawing certain batchesof the BL-5C battery, after approximately 100 incidents of overheating were reported globally. The advisory was not arecall it was a mere advise issued before Lenovo completed its investigations and found the batteries were counterfeits, said Kaul network security. Kumars family members said they will file a case against Lenovo in the consumer court on Wednesday. His cousin, Ravinder Kumar, said the companys response is insufficient. No senior Lenovo representative has contacted uslet alone tendering an apology. Two people came on Monday and clicked pictures of the damaged laptop, Ravinder said. According to him, Kumar has the bills and warranty letter from Lenovo to prove that the laptop and the battery were genuine. He said an official from Lenovo had called him on Tuesday and asked for the damaged laptop. Is this the way to handle such a situation They expect me to go and just hand overthe laptop on the basis of a laptop call Are they not entitled to take some responsibility when my brother is suffering like this, said Ravinder. He has filed a complaint on Lenovos helpline number about the accident. The battery had exploded less than a minute after Kumar took it out to check why his laptop would not switch on, despite 20 minutes of charging. business firewalls He was admitted at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, and discharged on Monday. 2011-12-09 Start blogging by clicking in this area.
